When you go to the Supermarket, a common question at the checkout line is, “Paper or Plastic?” Which is the Greener answer? Well, the plastic bags are a petroleum derivative and are not bio-degradable. The paper bags come from the cutting of trees. So what is the best answer? The preferred answer when you are asked “paper or plastic?” should be, “No thanks, I brought my own.” Many markets sell canvas bags with their logo. You can also get bags made out of parachute material that can be stuffed into a little bag the size of a cell phone. Even if you don’t buy a bag, at least take your paper or plastic bags back to the market before you recycle them. Every time you bring your groceries into the house, immediately take the bags back to your car and keep them in the trunk for next time. If every bag was used just twice, we would cut the consumption in half. Challenge yourself and see how many times you can use the same bag before it wears out. Grocery shopping isn’t the only time to be thinking about bags. How often do we buy a single item at a store and the clerk automatically puts it in a bag. Do you really have to have that bag, or can you get your item(s) home without it. It’s easy to just say no to bags.
